Which tranny is right for a 1997 4.2L V6

Hello and thank y'all up front for your help!
I am trying very hard to sort out the controversial information I am finding on the web. I have a 1997 V6 4.2L 4x2 F150 with XL cab and a blown transmission. I know it has a 4R70W. I was told that only a transmission from the exact year and engine model would qualify for a direct swap... is that true?
Is there different colored connectors (black or white) and if what difference does it make? Unfortunately I can't go and check the color of the connector because my truck is 450 miles away in New Mexico...

Thanks!

one from a 97 or 98 will swap just fine, the 99+ I think have a slightly diff connector but not 100% on that. I'd call a trusted tranny shop just to be sure.

Does the color matter?

Okay, thank you!
Does the color of the connector on the passenger side of the transmission matter? (white or black?)
Could I just repin the connector?
