Mercon III or V?
Mercon III or V?
Hey everybody, I've got what should be a simple question, but I can't find any answers and want to be sure. I've got a 1999 F-150 with 100000 miles and I want to change the trans filter and fluid. The code on my door jamb says "E" so its an E4OD. I have a Chilton repair manual that says use mercon III for an E4OD, and mercon V for a 4R70 transmission. I can't find mercon 3 and was wondering if it is now recommended to use V?
Thanks,
Nick
Thanks,

Thanks man, better safe than sorry. Edit: I just saw you post answering another question similar to mine in another forum. On my dipstick it says just plain "MERCON." I'm confused and want what is best for my vehicle. If I only decide to drop the pan, change the filter, and top off, will mixing the mercon V and (what I assume is in it) III be bad? Or does it not matter because it meets the III specs?

You should have a drain plug in your torque converter, so you should be able to get almost all of it out.
I previously had a 1995 Lincoln Mark VIII with the 4R70W. The Ford recommended fluid was Mercon. A former transmission engineer posted to all of us that we should switch to Mercon V. I switched as well as most of us on the Mark site and it worked fine.

You can use either Mercon or Mercon V. I don't think Ford makes Mercon any more so everything is back speced to Merc V.
There's no such thing as Mercon III, but regular Mercon and Dexron III were the same thing or at least compatible enough to be used interchangeably.

If the fluid has never been changed, get it all out of there, don't mix it.
Plain "MERCON" does not exist any more unless you find some that's been in storage for years. Mercon V is better.
On my dipstick it says just plain "MERCON."
