Transmission Problems Need HELP!

So tonight I left my apartment and headed to town and for some reason my truck will not shift out of 3rd gear into 4th and so forth. It will shift sometimes if I keep my foot on the gas but the truck just revs up like its in neutral until it finally shifts really hard... I don't know much about transmissions so I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is something minor or if i'm going to possibly need a new transmission. Obviously it seems pretty serious but then again I wouldnt know.

Thanks Guys,
Jfarris05

A lot of issues like this are caused by a bad MLPS, also called a neutral safety switch or a transmission range sensor at some parts stores. It's a cheap and easy thing to replace and it most often cures this issue.

One important note is that you have to align the sensor when you install it. You need to have the transmission in neutral and align the marks. When you are finished it should look a lot like this.

Here is the link for the full size pic.

That is for a car but it should give you the idea.

So just found out that I need a new transmission... they said they found metal shavings in the transmission... $3000 for a new one or $1000 for a used one
