Exclamation 04 OD inop help!

I was just driving home and my truck started acting like it was in neutral. Engine was fine, I just had no torque to the wheels. I checked the shifter and I was still in [D]rive so I down shifted into 2nd and it worked. I put it back into drive and I lost power again.

I then hit the O/D button and the transmission kicked back into gear and drove fine but I no longer had overdrive. My edge isn't showing any codes nor do I have any indications on the dash.

So right now as it sits my truck has no overdrive. This sucks. Anyways I need some help here maybe there's a quick fix. Maybe this isn't as expensive as I am thinking. Right now my stomach is in a knot cause I don't have 3k for a new transmission.

Anyone know how much fluid it takes to replace what's lost with a pan drop?

Put the truck in manual 2nd and see if there is engine braking when you let off the gas. If so then the internals are probably ok and the problem is most likely a control issue.

Okay I'll check that out soon as my kids get home from school. Thanks for pointing out the engine braking in 2nd. If it's a control issue what would be the most problematic part to look at next?

Thanks. I'll drop the pan this weekend.

I did stop by the local AAMCO and they well- started to rip me off. They did their transcan inspection and test drive then right off said it was going to be like $600 labor and $300-900 for repairs and worst case $3000 for a rebuild. I told them that was way over what I expected so the gal went out to talk to some of the guys working there. They came back with it's most likely a slip ring and the part was only like $5 plus $350ish labor. She also said my fluid was a tad low but it looked really good and wasn't burnt. So the mechanic said most likely the overdrive band was fine since there was no burnt fluid.

So I'm going to pull the pan myself and search for any stray bits to protect the gears and drive only if I have to until I can get the cash put away. Sucky timing right after the holidays.

my 04 screw done this at around 38k miles. it had the same symtoms as you and it ended up being an overdrive band. not trying to get you down or anything it costed me like $1100 to get that fixed.

I called a smaller private transmission shop that's been around for like 30 years. The guy highly recommended a full rebuild and he talked pretty honest. It'll cost around $1800 out the door. He's going to replace the torque converter and do some upgrades with a 1 year/12K warranty. Does that sound about right price wise?

What is the word on engine braking in manual 2nd?

I wouldn't rebuild it unless you are sure it isn't about $25 worth of parts causing the problem.

It wouldn't brake in 2nd. Either the OD band is gone or the slip ring. I have had some extremely hard shifts from OD to 3rd almost hard enough to break traction when I'd punch it. It scared the crap out of me when it did that. I thought the next sound would be my drive shaft hitting the ground. So I expect there is some wear that a rebuild would clean up.
