While towing uphill, my tranny throws a code...?

This question is for my 97 expedition, couple years back i noticed that after puting it in 4wd, my tranny every once in a while would give a 'diesel' sound (thats the best i can describe it, it really does sound like a diesel). Eventually it would go away after a few weeks tho. And this summer while towing the boat (shown in sig) in the ozarks (which can be a struggle sometimes with all the hills) the tranny threw a code. But once we got out of the mountains and back on the highway it went away. Now the diesel sound has come back but it only happens every once in a while. other than this the tranny is great, no slips or nothing; no more codes either... anyone ever heard of this or may know what it is? The truck has about 203K and every bit of it is highway, this truck runs like it did when it was new. Not sure if this helps, but the tranny fluid is nice and red and has no grey or hints of shavings or anything. thanks a lot in advance!
