Reverse Only!
CALLING ALL TRANNY GURUS OUT THERE!
Here's what I've got. It all seemed to start the other day on my way to work (about 6 miles) when it seemed like, at about 60 mph that my tranny started slipping (RMP increase without speed increase). I made it to work okay, worked my 24 hr shift and headed home. I decided to stop by the parts store on my way home and pick up some of that "stop slip" stuff made by Lucas, put it in and continued my drive home (about 3 miles). I got a mile or so down the road and lost everything but reverse. I eventually had to put it in 4 low to get it home at about 12 MPH. I got it into my driveway (a very slight hill) and it all but completely quit. To get it to move at all I was running it at 3k rpms. Put it in reverse and backed right in with no problem. I read somewhere on here that it could be the output shaft sensor. No one around here had it, so I went ahead and ordered it from the local (mentioned and badmouthed in another thread) stealership for about $30. Well, I had a brainstorm and decided I would pull the one out of my wife's Expe and swap them to see if it changed anything in either vehicle. No luck. Started pulling the tranny this afternoon. My question is...what it the likely cause inside the tranny? AODE in my '05 5.4 4x4 SCrew. I know I'm going to put a rebuild kit in it, but what else will I probably be replacing? The TC? Oh and does anyone know where I can find "exploded" views of this tranny? I've rebuilt an AOD before, just not and AODE. Any advice? Suggestions? All are welcomed other that the usual "take it to the tranny shop." I trust NO ONE else to work on my truck, so that's out of the question. OH yeah, and I've already changed the fluid and filter in a long shot attempt to fix this. Thanks guys, in advance.

An 05 doesn't have an AODE. I believe it's a 4R75E.
Before you pull the tranny, was the overdrive light blinking? If so, get ahold of a scanner that can read Ford tranny codes and pull them.

Hmm, isn't the 4R75E a version of the AODE? I just bought a filter kit for it and the AODE one that I bought matched up perfectly. 14 bolt pan...gasket matched up and all. Here's the page I found it on --->http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...S_752857289___
Again, ALL help is appreciated. Thanks, J

Right, but with almost 100k on the truck I should just go ahead and replace it while I'm in there, right?
**Update**
Got it out last night and sitting on my patio table ready for me to tear into it tomorrow when I get home from work. Anyone got any good sources for good quality cheap tranny parts?

You never told us if the OD light was blinking, and whether you had any codes. You may be doing an unnecessary rebuild - and even when you get it together it may still do the same thing due to an ELECTRONIC issue. These are NOT like the old transmissions, where the only external signals are a vacuum line and a TV lever or cable and everything internally is controlled strictly mechanically.

And the comment about it not being an AODE is very much correct. There are several differences. Similar, but different. You cannot swap an AODE in place of a 4R without changing some stuff in the tune because the gear ratios are different. Also, from tip to tail, the internals are weaker on the AODE and most of the parts will not interchange without using most of the rest of them. The differences start at the pump and end at the tailshaft.
Not the same transmission.
But, you can use the same filter, pan and pan gasket between them.

Sorry about that. The OD started blinking AFTER I lost everything but reverse. I DID pull the codes and they were PO720 and the limp home one, I think P2106. Like I said though, the codes came well after the problem. I did try to switch out the OSS Sensor to no avail. I put mine on my wife's expe and it still worked perfectly and I put hers on my truck and I STILL had the problem.
Okay, so can I get a rebuild kit for a 4R70W and be okay, or what? You guys just tell me what all I should replace and help me find a manual and I'll do it. Some direction here is what I need.

I'm still not convinced that your scanner pulled the TRANSMISSION codes. Those are 1700 series "P" codes. You also may have had a OSS *circuit* issue, not the sensor itself.
