Transmission fluid change

Just a quick question on the Tranny fluid change. I have a 2005 F150 STX. Changed the tranny fluid and filter the other day, and without thinking I added a few quarts too many. The level is definately above the max line. I am going to drain some out when I get a chance but I will have run the truck about a week before doing this. Just wondering will this hurt the transmission in any way? Any suggestions appreciated.

Yes, it can hurt the trans. Get the fluid out ASAP! If it's too high the rotating parts will whip the ATF into a foam. Foam can't lubricate, so metal parts will wear on metal. Foamed fluid is also GREATLY expanded, so you could have enough to force fluid out of the vent and/or dipstick. If that fluid lands on the hot exhaust, you might not have a truck any longer. Yes, I've seen that happen.

Crap, ok thanks I will drain some tonight as soon as I get home. It's only been 3 days so far so hopefully there is no damage yet. I have been checking and haven't seen any overflowing yet.

Good luck. When you drop the pan, I think it only takes about 6 qts to fill it back up.

You can remove a cooler line and drain some. I wouldn't drop the pan again.

Well I put 7 quarts in so I think I only need to drain a quart or 2. When I dropped the pan I had just loosened the front bolts on the pan and probably about a quart drained out, but I will try the cooler line.

Or you can take it to a quick lube type place and have them suck it out. That is what I did, i overfilled mine by about a half quart or so and took it in and they sucked it out for free. I think if you drop the pan again and the gasket gets fluid all over it it could leak and keep leaking slowly......
