what tranmission do i have

what tranmission do i have

hi guys
i have a 97 4.6 v8. i am wondering what trans i have? are there other trans units that bolt up? i worked on vw for a while and there parts interchange all over the place. i hope ford does the same. thanks dave

Read the TR code on the door label.

You have either a 4R70W (most likely) or an E4OD.

thanks.. im looking to get the best mpg i can and still pull the trailer when i have to. will any other trans bolt up?

So you are wanting to swap trannys to get better MPG?

yes.
in the vw world tdi trans will give a good all around power band but more so good mpg

All 4.6L trucks have the 4R70W.

There is no transmission that will give you better fuel economy.

so the 4r70w trans is the same in all applications? i did some looking and found out it was used in the stang gt, ltd and a few other models. my question is do they all bolt up the same and are the sensors the same? i think i read that ford started using them in 1980-like 2003.

I've got an '08 5.4L, 4X4, Lariat SCrew. What tranny do I have in this thing?
4R70E or a 4R75E, or a 4R100?

It's a 4R75E. The 4R70E is used with the 4.6L, the 4R100 went out of production at the end of 2004.
