1st to 2nd shift issue?
1st to 2nd shift issue?
My 01 Screw has a 4r70w in it and when it shifts from 1st to 2nd it takes a long time (double normal) then cluncks into gear. From what I have read it could be an 1-2 accumulator spring? Is this correct or could it be anything else? Fluid is full and doesent look old or smell burnt.
Thanks for the help in advance!

how to replace it, drop the pan, and the valve body, then you are staring right at all the accumulators, compress the one you need, take the snap ring out of it, and replace the spring. and go back together.
You will also need about 9 or 10 quarts of Merc V trans fluid
sounds like your problem. Once its actually in first or second gear does it slip?

drop the valve body and remove the snap ring holding the 1-2 accumulator spring and boot. either the spring is broken or the boot is torn. but the springs were known for failing. there a couple bucks from ford for them.

It just slips when its shifting from 1-2 then drives normal and shifts normal into all other gears. Any idea where to get a parts list to replace everything in the 1-2 accumulator area?
Go to Ford for the spring, get the upper and lower and the accumulator valve as well. You don't need to drop the valve body to get at the retainer and spring. Just drop the pan and the spring retaining snap ring is in the front passenger side of the tranny. if the spring is broken you will probably be able to just push up on the retainer with your finger and it will move in a bit. When you go to put the new one in, you can either purchase the compression tool, or do as I did and use a floor jack and a long extension with a large socket on the end. be careful to put the retainer square in the hole as the hole that the springs and valve is in is at a bit of an angle.
Now I just realized something that could make all of this wrong. I did the Spring swap in my 95 Mustang GT which has a AODE and not a 4r70w like in my truck. I have yet to do the spring swap in my truck as it has the same hard 1-2 shift issue.
In case you are curious my car was doing the same thing and the lower spring was broken.
I will see if I can find a schematic that show the location of the valve.

For the 1-2 DON'T drop the valve body. It can be gotten to without all that. I tried to PM you but it won't let me. I have some good info and sources for what you need including instructions.

Here a couple of scans form my Shift kit install for my Mustang, Look like the AODE and 4r70w both share the same basic layout.

I still have the upper and lower springs in my tool box. I will post the part numbers after work.
