4R70W Tailhousing leak?

I'm helping my buddy out of a pickle. His 16yr daughter took the truck and called later saying it wouldn't move.

Its a 99 F150 (4.6) with 68k. Upon inspection there is fluid all over the underside of the truck from the tranny tail housing to the rear bumper- Real bright and shiny No other leakage forward on the trans.

I noticed the dust cover where the yoke slides into the tail housing had popped off and I suspect this is where the loss of fluid occurred- its bone dry on the stick.

Any ideas? I suspect the tail housing seal. What other potential damage if ran dry?

Depending on how long it ran like that it can be ok or very bad. No way to tell until they fix it and find out.

The bigger question is why the rear seal popped out. Those have to be pressed in and can't just fall out.

Or, was it just the 'dust cover' part that extends from the rear seal that tore off somehow leaving the rear seal intact int he extension housing? If so then that won't cause a leak because it isn't the actual seal.

Darrin,
The dust cover is removed but the fluid trail starts from there. We have not had time to remove the drive shaft yet to inspect the seal. My thoughts were to install a new seal, drop the pan and inspect, then add fluid and see where we go from there.
Any others thoughts?
