Few transmission concerns.
rings
if you pull up a diagram of the aode there is three rings on the output shaft that if the middle one brakes it releases pressure to the direct clutch pack .they seal to the case look like piston ring normally are steel but there are other options for the app.of 1980 up aode trans.i cant direct you to a diagram but have seen it opened up
There are also 2 split rings that are on the nose of the output shaft that ride in the direct clutch drum. Those factory seals are scarf cut teflon. Being that all of these rings must allow the output shaft to turn without either binding up in the case or binding up to the direct drum, it is impossible that they could be made from rubber. It would die a quick and ugly death if it were made from rubber.
I have been kind of waiting for more info on what ring this could be.
The reason I asked about the case is that if this is the problem that I think it is you either have to sleeve or replace the case to fix it.

the steel rings are replaced by teflon. i dont think they are rubber.....i believe they are the same ones referred to by darrin in his post. these are the only seals in this area that really would cause youy to lose direct
sorry
i was only tring to see if there was anyone out there that had the same issues as i ,i already had it done ,but if i can put something out there that someone can benefit from, i have fingers crossed, can't be doin this annually .get botom of things.
