Shift Kit Questions

I have always owned manual trucks. But the wife said it was time to get four doors and you know what that means. I have to get an auto. And for the longest time i looked for one with the 4R100 in it so I wouldn't have to worry about stressing the tranny.

Well I found out they stopped make the F150/4R100 combos in 01 so that means i got the 4R70. I worried that with my future mods and my life style i will stress it and it will fail prematurely.

I have heard a lot about shift kits but i really dont know much about them. I dont know much about automatics at all. I have really tried to stay away from them.

Heres what i would like to see change. I want to be able to lock the torque converter in od and not have it down shift so easily and i would like to be able to control it like a manual when i am off roading and towing. Then put it back to normal for the wife to drive.

Is this possible? What are some benefits of a shift kit.

A shift kit won't do that. You need custom programming for your PCM. I don't have a recommendation for who can do that for you.

I have a factory tech valve body in my 4r70 and it helped quite a bit. it does down shift now and then but only when it needs to. the racing bypass valve I am using closes up and it makes boost when it comes to hills and the trans stays in overdrive.

the results you want will be best achieved from a monstorbox 4r70 that's going to be the closest to your goal without going to a manual valve body

I got my shift kit from Mike Dunn, the factory tech valve body is the seperator plate (just in pieces VS being assembled) if you get the Factory tech shift kit there's a better way to install it than the directions say to, if it is installed the way the directions show then you will get whiplash from each 1-2 upshift

you could always swap a 4R100 in, if after all, that is what you really want.

Yeah...... But then were looing at all new torsion bars, cross members, wireing harness and what not. I have heard more then one person say its not worth it. But to swap in somthing built to handle more power then stock would be easier and since im not trying t oachive huge numbers would be better for my situation i think.

TT you have 2 options.

Build a race spec 4r70w which should handle what your gonna throw at it unless your gonna put down some really nasty #'s at the rear.

swap to a 4r100, that has 2 options in its self, ford remans are good with a good warranty timeline. or a race built as well. i personally think i would have had less hassle trying to swap over than trying to find a good builder for the 4r70w the first time

contact me if you'd like to know who im going to go with for my 4r70w now that i have been bent over the first time with a local guy.

I know you put the lightning swap in while i was on deployment. How long have you had it in? How long did the tranny last? I dont plan on rediculus power but i am guna get more. And im towing for the first time with something other than a 5spd and i am so paranoid.

talk to alan brown (he's on this site by that user name) he does 4r75 swaps might be a better choice and is what i am going to do. after he does his "work" the 4r75 will bolt in place of your 4r70 and work off of your stock computer

my original trans lasted 2k miles, most of that was towing cause i was in a major bind and had to move. those miles started at 194k. since then i've been down because of a local guy who cant build or trouble shoot the trans.

Thats a bummer. I have been moving my house from socal to back home to montana the last two days. I am so used to towing with 5spd's i have learned a lot about this auto by doing it.

I am almost maxed out on the scales for what my truck will tow and im averaging 13 mpg with overdrive on on the flats for nevada and then when i comes to the hills i kick overdrive off and i get about 11 mpgs.

Not bad for a 6300 pound enclosed trailer and 600 pounds in the bed on 3.55's
