best spot to drill?

i have an autometer trans temp guage i just bought. runnin 38's so i wanna keep an eye on it. its an electrical guage, and the tranny is an E4OD with shift pack. the instructions suggest to drill and tap the pan but i dont want it sticking down like that. if antone knows FOR SURE if i can drill and tap anywhere else thats not sticking out i would really appreciate it.

thanks
joe

There's a port on the driver's side of the trans, just above the pan, towards the front of the trans. It has a black hex head pipe plug in it. That's where I recommend placing the sender. It's already tapped for 1/8" NPT, which is what most of the senders are. I've measured temperatures there and in the pan at the same time and only see a couple degrees difference, sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

You can't just drill and tap a pan anyways...waaaay to thin. The only way to install in the pan is to drill a large hole and have a threaded bung welded in.

I drilled my pan and used nylon washers, rtv and haven't had a single leak. I agree, welding it in is the best way, not the only way though.

Nice...I'd never do it, but cool.
