Getting ready to service tranny...

I have been reading a couple how to's and feel that I could do it myself. I read this how to http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...nsmission.html and was wondering if you have to refill the torque converter manually or if the pump just fills it up? I also don't want to take any of the tranny cooler lines off. How much fluid is stored in the lines. I heard there was another how to with pictures as well but could not find it, could somebody please post that link as well. Thank you for your help

The torque converter refills from the pump. There is no other way to fill it.

If you're not going to disconnect a cooler line, how will you get the old fluid out of the transmission?

Beginning in 02 Ford stopped installing torque converter drain plugs in the 4r70w transmission. If your truck is an 02 or newer you'll either have to pull a cooler line or be content to drop the pan, change the filter and refill.

If your truck is an 01 or older and you've drained the pan and torque converter add 5 quarts of fluid then start the truck and slowly add the rest. With the parking brake on move the shift lever from park into drive and reverse a few times also. Do not overfill.

you can get all but about a quart or less by dropping the pan and draining the torque converter. you cooler will hold about a quart i guess. just remember to toss the little yellow thing if you have it.
