Transmission or Computer Problem?
I have a 2001 F250 super duty 7.3 litter 4X4. I got stuck in snow two days ago and had to rock it to get it out; put it in Reverse then Drive then Reverse then Drive...so on and so forth until I got out. It is an automatic too. Since then it is having a hard time shifting out of first gear when I take off from a complete stop. I have to give it gas and rev the RPMs up to almost 3 then let off the gas and let the RPMs drop then it will finally shift out of first. When its gets out of first gear it shifts fine into all other gears until I stop again.
Is this a transmission problem or a computer problem? If a computer how do you reset it? Thanks!!!! ~BEN

Don't bother changing the trans fluid. This trans is done.
In 2001, only in the 7.3L diesel, Ford used a one way clutch called a mechanical diode. When they fail, and it looks like all of them do, it won't shift out of first gear unless you rev the engine high and let off the go pedal. The only fix is to rebuild or replace the trans.
