Squeel during 1st to 2nd shift (not acc belt)
Squeel during 1st to 2nd shift (not acc belt)
I have a 2003 extended cab F150. It's my work truck and it's done this since about 50,000 miles. It now has 145,000.
It only squeels under heavy acceleration and only on the 1st to second shift. I know it's not the belt cause when it does it bad, I can hold the gas down and it will squeel and not shift till I let up.
I have had the fluid changed twice since 50,000. I have also been really babying it trying to make it last.
My problem is I'm getting ready to move and I need it to tow my playtoy to Illinois. I have a 1998 Passport that's highly modified. I'm not sure I trust the tranny to tow in it's current condition.
Anyone with some insight?

It's the belt. This is very common. To prove it, warm it up and shut it down. Pull the belt, fire it up, and immediately run it hard and I bet you get no squeal on the shift. Shut it down right away and put the belt back on. Replace the belt with a Gatorback and clean the pulleys with brake cleaner.
It should be safe to run for a minute or so with no belt.

Just looking for a bit of an explanation, I'm not disagreeing.
Why will the tranny not shift when I hold the gas down (if we agree that it's a acc belt issue)? Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would the acc belt have anything to do with the shift?

I went ahead and put a new belt on just to get rid of that possibility. So far so good. I've not been up a good steep grade yet to really test it. it needs to be hard acceleration up to about 45-50mph under hard throttle.
Hard to do around town.

I have the exactly same problem. Espeacaily with my edge. always wondered what thats was.. i thought it was the belt.
Ill be driving around,, ill hammer it and right when it hit 2nd it squeels. it does it a lot louder if im at WOT and let off the gas while its switch from 1st to 2nd.
Edit: i didnt see that it wont even shift if you let off.. that SUCKS!!.. hope its nothing to big.. i should get mine checked

I'm not sure about F-150's, but my cousins '04 Dodge Dakota with a 5.7L in it had the same problem with the squeeks and the 1st to 2nd thing. I turned out to be his U-joint on his trannie. Stupid Dodges....
Well I've done a few pulls (none on steeper uphill grades where it usually did it worse) but so far so good the belt seems to have made the squeel go away.
I need to get on the interstate and see if I can dupilcate the shifting problem.
