Automatic transmission interchangeability

I need to replace the automatic on my '97 F-150 4x4 5.4L. I found a used transmission with only 50,000 miles on it from an identical 2002 model. My Ford garage says I need to have the tag number on it and the corresponding tag number from my transmission for them to tell me if the transmission will work. However, I don't have a way to check the tag number on my truck as I am currently about 1,500 miles away from it.

Does anybody know about interchangeability of automatic transmissions?

The electronics are different. Not that big a deal for a shop that knows what they are doing. They can swap the electronics from your transmision into the new one. That includes the case connector and internal wiring harness so the valve body would have to come out. Either that or repin the harness on your truck.

Also make sure that you get a 4x4 transmission.

Not a direct swap though if thats what you are after.

The 02 would have a 4R70w with a door tag code of U and 14 pan bolts. The '97 could have that tranny being a direct swap, but it most likely has the beefier E4OD with a door tag code of E and 20 pan bolts. Different computer and programming, and purdy sure not modifiable. Plus the donor needs to be a 4x4 lile Darrin said.

Yeah, what I was talking about was a 4R to 4R swap. Not an E4OD to 4R swap. That one would be definite trouble.

Guys, thanks so much for taking the time to reply. All this is very confusing to me. I apologize for the delay in responding to you but we just had a birth in the family and that trumps everything!

No problem, congrats on the young'in!

Even if it was the E4OD's replacement the 4R100 (1999+), computers would still be different than a 4R70w.
