Tranny Slipping?
Tranny Slipping?
Been a while since I've posted, but I have a new problem :\
I drive 3 hours to and from Dallas a few times a month (this is just about all highway) depending on the holidays, and the last few times I've noticed that the RPMs will suddenly jump up 300-500 RPM as if I had switched out of O/D, but I never touched the switch, and going out of O/D would put the RPMs much higher than that.
This past weekend, I was driving on the highway, and was coming down a steeper, long hill to a stop light, so I took it out of O/D, and then the O/D light started blinking (Im not exactly sure when the light started blinking but it was sometime after this), and it was shifting strange (since it went into limp mode). I had my programmer in the truck, so I used it to pull the code and it gave me a P1728. I cleared the code and I havent had any problems since then (put about 200 miles on it since then).
So I stopped by the dealership yesterday and set up an appointment on Thursday to have it checked out.
Based on the symptoms, what would some of you guess is the problem? Is a rebuild in my future? Other than the problems on the highway, it drives and shifts just fine.
I have one other unrelated question. It seems that 1997 was a transition year for transmissions. The sticker on my door has tranny code E, so how do I know if I have an E40D or 4R100?

P1728 Transmission Transmission slippage detection. Excessive amount of clutch slippage was detected. Transmission slippage, erratic or no TCC operation. May flash TCIL.
I would say that it may well be the torque converter clutch solenoid. Now that is just a guess, but it sounds like the TCC is cycling in and out for some reason and letting the torque converter clutch to slip or fully unapply at times.
Of course, there is no way to accurately diagnose over the internet unless it is blatantly obvious what is wrong. Any of us trying to help are only guessing based on very limited information.

Well I dropped the truck off this morning around 9:30 or 10:00, by 5:30 they still couldnt reproduce the problem (shocker), and so Im out a day of work and I still wont get my truck back until tomorrow morning, with no diagnosis and a $90 statement...woo.
Guess Ill just have to keep driving it till it wont drive anymore
