Tranny ATF and Differential Oil Questions

I am about to flush My transmission and change the oil in both differentials.
What is the required fluid for my truck? tranny and differential?
Mine is a 97 F150 XLT V8 4.6 Flare side 4x4

Mercon ATF for the tranny and Transfer case. 75W140 gear oil for the rear diff and 75W90 gear oil for the Front diff.

MERCON V replaced MERCON for all 4R70W applications years ago. This year MERCON V replaced MERCON for all applications that used MERCON.

Might as well change your transfer case fluid as well, it takes ATF, roughly up to 2 quarts.

Will probably take around 14-16 quarts to totally flush tranny. Don't forget the 4oz. modifier for the rear.

Tranny uses Mercon V and transfer case uses Mercon ATF. The tranny should be flushed if it has standard Mercon in it now and you switch to Mercon V (recommended).

Front diff uses 80W90, synthetic not required but you may use a synthetic 80W90 or 75W90.

Rear diff depends on exactly what it is. The Dana EX 80 uses the same stuff as the front. The Dana 80 and the Ford axle requires synthetic 75W140. Limited slips require a 4 oz bottle of friction modifier which you can get at the Ford dealer.

Friction modifier?

My Haynes repair manual says that friction modifier (8 oz., I think) is to be added to the rear differential, but it does not differentiate between LS and non-LS rear-ends. I have a 2001 SuperCrew 4x4 with a non-LS 4R70W trans (3.55 gears). Do I need to add the friction modifier to the rear when I change the fluids in the tranny, front/rear diffs, and transfer case in the near future?

What does your owner's manual say?

That would be the first reference I'd look to. Next, call a dealer and they can tell you. I'm not sure on your truck because it is a 2001.

No, the friction modifier is only needed with limited slips. Open diffs take straight gear lube. 75W140 synthetic required in the rear on 01's. Front takes 80W90, synthetic not required, but you may use synthetic 75W90 and i'd recommend that you do so.

I'll add 2 comments:

On a 97 change the transmission filter when you change the fluid.

Many Mercon V rated fluids are actually multi-vehicle fluids. These will work fine in both the transmission and transfer case.

I was looking at fluid options today at wally world. The mobil is ATF, but says its Mercon V compliant. I guess that would be the multi-vehicle fluid. It listed quite a few it was good for. Any problems with using that fluid?
This is the one I plan to use.

Dexron III, Dexron IIIE, Dexron
Approved for H specification, the latest GM Dexron III performance level

Recommended for Chrysler automatic transmissions

If it's Mercon V compliant, it's fine. I'd do a flush if the converter doesn't have a drain plug.

Yep! It will all be flushed first with a new filter, it's already sitting on my workbench. Just wanted to make sure muti grade would be fine, didn't see any Mercon V specific. Plus I trust the Mobil products. It is compatible with both Mercon's.
