I have a 2000 f150 with 5.4l auto. 4x4. when driving from a stop it
shifts late from 2nd into 3rd. all other gear shifts are smooth
I changed the fluid and filter with no effect. when I drop the pan, there
was no metal in it and the fluid was still clean.
could this be a solenoid problem??

What do you mean by late? About what speed or rpm is it shifting at? And do you have overdrive and is that shifting in ok?

 

sometimes it shifts at 30 mph and 3000 rpms
other times a little less.

seems if i let up on the gas it shifts sooner

overdrive and the tc lock up are fine

 

That sounds about normal too me, i dont think it has a problem. Hopefully some other will come in with some opinions

 

no its not normal..always shifted at about 22 mph and a lot less rpm..
seem to have a long delay getting out od 2nd.

 

Did you check for any DTC's?

LOL..sorry. Did you check for any codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes). not all codes set off the check engine light, might be a place to start

You are probably dealing with a direct clutch issue. Any pressure loss, or worn/glazed clutches can cause it. Have someone hook up a scanner and make sure TPS and MAF signals are OK. If data looks OK, may be rebuild time.
