2005 shot transmission...help

Thanks everybody so far for the updates!
Here is a little more information:
When Ford ran the diagnostic the codes that came back were P0743 and P0740 (which means nothing to me) but they removed the trans pan to further diagnose possible internal trans concerns. They said that revealed that there was metal in the pan and therefore recommended that the trans be replaced.
Prior to the CEL I did not notice anything while driving the vehicle, and still don't. I'm planning on taking some of the advice you guys gave and get a second opinion. I'm asking buddies around here for a good reliable mechanic they could recommend, and I'll go from there. Anybody know of one in the San Jose, CA area?
