Leaking Transmission

I am new here and a new owner of a 95 F-150 4X4 with the 302 and 5 speed manual transmisson. After bringing the truck home, I noticed that it has a leak from the transmission. There is fluid on the crossmember and it also apperars on the bottem bolt that holds the transfercase adapter to the transmission. It has not been easy to locate the leak. Any help would great.

I got a really good deal on the truck. I bought it because I needed something to tow my Jeep CJ with about 4 to 5 times a year. After I bought it I noticed the towing capacity was very low. I have not searched to find out why, but I imagine the clutch or is it a weak transmission? The code for my transmission is M. My Jeep and trailer probaly weigh about 5000-6000 together.

Thanks
Tim

It's probably a rear main seal leak on the trans. Should be an easy fix.
I would go ahead and tow your trailer, just be aware and cautious to not ride the clutch. That's the weak point, but you should be fine. If you disk is worn, it may not be long before you need a new clutch anyways at which time you can upgrade to a heavy duty unit.

Had a similar issue. Was the Extension Housing seal, which where the transmission connects to the drive shaft and is right above that cross member. It started as a slow leak but became bigger and problematic. Took about 2 hours for me but was able to fix it with a 12 dollar seal and some mercon fluid.

Or the three rubber plugs on the top of the tranny are known to leak. Simple fix from in the cab with the shifter boot removed.

Ford rated the M5OD-R2 low from the factory. I beat the wee out of the '92 302/M5OD, and have towed 9-10k with a 300/M5OD, and the '97 4.6L/M5OD before gettin' the diesel. Haven't broke one yet.
