Oh, the "dealer" recommends.

I believe Casey is talking about a "service manual". i.e. the one that came with the truck.

On my 04, the recommended fluid change is you don't need to do it. I believe they only recommend changes for the 4R100.
I had it done at 30k. It was the flush and there was a definite difference in the color of the fluid. Older was a bit darker, although not burnt.

BlueJay said the dealer recommends changing the fluid at 30,000 but that is also the mileage listed in the service manual. Ford recommends that service interval for the AX4S, 4F50N, 4F27E, and 4R100 transmissions. The other transmissions it says to check the fluid condition. Sounds like a "use your own judgement" situation to me.

Kingfish - your fluid will normally be darker when you change it. Transmission fluid naturally gets darker with heat. If it is very dark and/or smells burnt then you have a problem.

I definitely realize that. Had that problem some years ago on my 90 when the trannie went out at 140k. Bad slippage in OD.

good point on checking the amount of clutch material in the trans pan. Not to mention seeing if there is excessive metal fiber on the magnet. I do like the idea of frequent partial oil change which at least gets you new oil maybe not needing a full flush. thanks guys.
