Service Transmission myself?
Service Transmission myself?
I have never serviced any transmission and i am at about 63k miles and thinking about servicing it myself. I have instructions to do it but my question is should i just bring it to my mechanic and pay only $130 for him to do it or is it worth it to attempt to do it myself? I guess i really want to know the time frame and complication factor on the job.
By "servicing" your transmission I assume you maen changing the fluid and filter. If that's all you're wishing to do, I'd say sure. Go for it. It'll be a little bit of a messy job (be sure you have a drain pan of some sort handy to catch all that fluid when you drop the pan) but as long as you don't mind getting a little messy, shouldn't be a real big deal. But then again, I try to do just about everything myself--thus the screen name! Good luck--DIY.
If you mean the regular service of dropping the pan, changing the filter and about 7 quarts of fluid, my dealer did mine for $86. It is not worth the mess and dealing with getting rid of the fluid for me to do it. If you mean draining the torque converter and about 12 quarts, then it is worth the $130, in my opinion. Just a messy self job.
