How bad is the 4r70w?

I am looking a a 2001 SC F150 4X4 with 80k on it and wondering how you guys feel about this tranny? I know Ford doesn't make real good trannies and just wondering what I need to look for.

Also if I do get it besides a big tranny cooler what else can I do? The truck is on 35s, but will get regeared to 4.56s asap.

Not bad at all! It is a great tranny as long as you maintain it properly.
Do a shift modification on it, and it really wakes it up!
DO NOT USE TRANS-GO SHIFT KITS. Go to TCCOA.com, and read the tech articles in the transmission section there for information on what to do.

Do not J-mod a truck valvebody in order to do those mods you need a car valvebody. I suggest the FactoryTech seperator plate kit as it was designed to be used on thruck valvebodies.

No. If you want the trans cooler, get a better cooler. A pan doesn't help cooling much.

Well I am willing to do whatever to make it last longer.

I put in one of these...

Granted I'm pulling a 6500# trailer in FL heat. I installed it before the Factory Aux tranny cooler. I also put in a tranny temp guage which I would recommend doing first if you're concerned about heat. You may not need a bigger/extra cooler if you're not going over 180-190 degrees-F. If you plan on doing hard offroading or towing then you may very well want the extra cooling.

edit: oh, 2002 5.4 3.55ls 4x2

I have a '99 f-150 4x4 with a 5.4L and was wondering if a shift kit or a valve body recalibration kit will shorten the life of my transmission.

people will bolt everything on in an effort to increase performance but sometimes may forget to keep recycling hte fluid

change the fluid completely every 15-20k miles (10-15 if you tow hardcore). if you have a stock transmission cooler, it is usually more than adequate unless you tow large loads, even with tires and gears. a simpler way out for additional cooling capacity is adding a small e-fan to your stock cooler. plumbing for a larger cooler will leak if not done properly and is a hassle compared to crimping a few wires

my buddy put a gauge to his 2002 fx4 with 35's , tow package, and stock 3.73s, he stayed in a reasonable transmission temperature range the whole time, only coming barely into the yellow at a dead stop in 100 degree heat

My 4r70w has over 198,000 original miles on it.

Just recently the overdrive started acting up. I figure with that many miles it has a right to act up. So soon I'll be putting the old Engine and Trany out to pasture. Time to install some fresh horses under the hood.

There isn't any real difference in the valvebody--In the article, he said that the best 4R70W to start with is one out of a 5.4L F150!
I did that on my truck, and it works like gangbusters.
