DEXRON or dexTron

I'm just curious, maybe someone knows something I don't but I've never heard of DexTRON before I started hearing it on some hotrod shows and "Trucks!" on TV, and a few forums.

Is this just slang for DEXRON? Do folks call it DexTRON because it sounds better with a "T?" Or is it a fluid I'm not familiar with?

If that is the case, then it's a VERY common mispronounced word. (And misspelled).

You're right, I say Mercon V to be exact...but I admit, I still maintain the Tundra I sold to my mother in law and it calls for dexron III.

And no doubt they are passing themselves off as some kind of expert

I should change my filter and fluid on my '98 soon. I believe it is still the original fluid (truck has 56k miles) Do I use this V stuff?

Also is changing the filter and replacing the amount of fluid I get out from the pan drop sufficient? Or do in need to get more of the fluid changed out? I don't tow.

Thanks!

search...

No matter what the dipstick says, Mercon V for the 4R70w, Mercon for the E4OD/4R100. Pan drop will change about a third of the fluid. Draining the TC gets a lot more, a full flush thorugh the cooler gets it all.

FWIW, Ford is saying it's okay now to use Mercon V as a service fluid for transmissions that originally came filled with plain Mercon. Mercon is gradually being phased out of bulk stock.

And you can bet I'm stocking up on regular mercon for the 4r100. I'll believe the engineer that was on the design team for the E4OD/4R100, over the bean counters that prolly are axing the fluid.

You're past due for a tranny change. Read the manual for mercon or mercon V. IMO, it should be changed every 25-30 thousand miles. I'm **** and go overboard but I do a complete tranny flush using this method: Pump inlet flush machine

This kind attaches to the pump intake after the pan and filter is removed. This machine only supplies fresh new fluid to the pump intake and as the fluid passes through the transmission it dumps out to a collection tray and never goes back through for a second pass. All of the old fluid and crud is GONE and replace with fresh new fluid. After the service a new filter is installed, the pan replaced and then it is topped off with new fluid to the proper level on the dipstick.

This process takes a total of 20 quarts of fluid to flush out 15 quarts of old fluid, replaces the fluid, and gives you the opportunity to look in the pan for anything unusual that would indicate a pending failure.

Everyone should have this type of service done every 30,000 miles, but definitely before your truck goes out of warranty. By looking in the pan you may get an indication that you are about to have transmission trouble that might show up right after you get out of warranty.
