You have a 4R70W. A 5.4 will work, but it's a somewhat involved swap. See this thread:

I've asked a moderator to move your post and this reply to its own thread.

Let me throw a screw in this by saying. I have a 2003 f-150 xlt 4.6 with a 4r75w bolted to it. It came from the factory like this cause in 03 ford put the 4r75w in certain f-150’s. In 2004 they stopped using 4r70w’s and only used 4r75w’s. I wish I would have taken pics cause you probably don’t believe me but I thought it was a 4r70w myself until the transmission went out and I pulled it out and disassembled it and the top ring under the front pump has 4r75w stamped in it.

There is a data tag in the driver's door opening. Under TR will be either an E or a U. E is 4R100 and U is 4R70W. You have one of those two transmissions.

Aye did you actually find out! Im having this problem now

[QUOTE=brokeazztruck;5201877]People keep posting, look at the vin tag, if it's U is a 4r70w. That's great, but not all 4r70w's are interchangeable, so they are not the "same". These are the different 4r70w's for 2003. Nobody ever says what's the difference, or if they are interchangeable. Are all the 4x2 4r70w's interchangeable, and are all the 4x4 4r70w's interchangeable? What's the difference between the 2 different numbers? Nobody knows this stuff. Here's the different trans for 03 4r70w...

AT, 8-280 (4.6L), (4R70W), 4x2
AT, 8-280 (4.6L), (4R70W), 4x4
AT, 6-255 (4.2L), (4R70W), 4x2 (ID 1L3P-DA)
AT, 6-255 (4.2L), (4R70W), 4x4 (ID 1L3P-EA)
AT, 8-330 (5.4L), 4R70W (standard load), 4x2, ID 1L3P-LA
AT, 8-330 (5.4L), 4R70W (standard load), 4x2, ID 2L1P-EA
AT, 8-330 (5.4L), 4R70W (standard load), 4x4, ID 1L3P-JA
AT, 8-330 (5.4L), 4R70W (standard load), 4x4, ID 2L1P-FA[/QU.

I need to know if there interchangeable i have a 2l1p ea. And i dont know if i need the same exact transmission with the same tag or any 4r70w with my specs without the same tag id
