E4OD Tranny leak
Twice in the last 6 months, my 1993 F150 with an E4OD transmission has spewed out transmission fluid after making a fairly long trip. (>150mi) The fluid looks to be running out of the access cover for the torque converter. After it cools down overnight, it is fine. After the first episode, I just thought that it was overfilled. I changed the fluid and filter, and all was fine until last week.
I had a similar problem with my 1995 F-150 4x4 351. I had my snow plow on, was running in 4x4, got home plowed some snow and noticed tranny fluid in my driveway. I looked under the truck and there was a fairly steady stream of fluid coming from the bell housing. I parked the truck for a couple days, added 2 quarts of fluid and ran it to find no leak. Ran it again, but really hard, and still no leak. What could be going on?
The seal for the torque converter is getting too hot. When it's hot it gets soft and does not seal. Once it cools it often seals again.
More trans cooling will help. So will an aftermarket seal.
