Unhappy My F150 feels like it's on rummble stips! HELP!

Hello all!

I need help with my 98 F150 4X4 4.6l with 85K miles!!!

About six months ago I started to notice a "shutter" at 65 Mph when I accelerated. Over time (a few months) the shutter would happen at over 50 Mph only when I accelerated. I bought the truck used about 3 years ago so I thought I would have the Tranny power flushed and filled at the local Jiffy Lube during my oil change to see if that would help. It sure did not help!

That was two months ago. Now it shutters at 35 MPH and on occasion now after I stop at a stop sign. The tranny slips a bit before ingaging!

I did notice some ATF in my drive way after the flush and fill.
It was down 2 qrts from the leak I guess old jiffy did not seal the pan fully after the flush and fill.

Anyways, I took it to a local garage today and asked him to see if he could find the problem.

I was hoping U-Joints and so was the garage... He called me today and said the vibration is comming from the tranny.

He said he would have to open it up and best case it's the torque converter or the pump?

Worst case a rebuid of the tranny at $1800-$2200.

Does this sound like a good plan?

how much should a torgue converter replace cost?

Is that to much for a rebuid?

is he forgetting anything? Am I getting ripped?

Any comments??????

Thanks,

First of all, did Jiffy use Mercon or Mercon V fluid which your tranny is supposed to use? You be surprised how many places don't know any better and dump "general purpose" ATF into these trannys!!

If all was done right at Jiffy, then Napa store sells a product called Lubegard that can really help eliminate shudder in these trannys, might work. If not, then it does sound like the torque converter is bad. I guesstimate stock replacement converters are around $200.

$1800-2200 is a bit on the steep side for a rebuild.

Are you sure it is not the engine misfiring?? Is your fuel filter plugged? How about spark plug wires? Do you have any stored codes?

I assume "Power flush" means that the transmission filter was not changed...

Thanks for the replys!

The slipping and shaking started before Jiffy so I really can not blame them for my problem. I wish I could! I was hoping a fulsh would have fixed it! They did drop the pan and clean out the gunk that's why it started leaking. they did not seal it up right when they put it back on. As for the filter I have no idea! I dought they touched it!

Thanks for the info on the "power Flush" I will never have it done again on any vehical! I will have it done right at a REAL SHOP next time!

The engine runs great! The shop that has it now says he ruled that out! That was one of my thoughts also! I was convinced it was the U-Joints! It just felt like it! Don't know why it just did!

I was not surprised when he said the vibration was coming from the tranny. I really knew it with the slip after a stop!

When I bought the truck it had 65K on it 3 or 4 years ago so I have no idea what the first owner did to it driving or maintenance wise!

What would be a good price for a rebuild if it comes to it?

What would be a good price if it's the torque converter only?

Is this a common problem with 98 F150's?

I would think your receipt should show if they charged you for a replacement transmission filter. If the filter clogs up then you probably won't have proper flow of the fluid through your torque converter. I also agree with 01SCREW's advice...

If it feels like you're on rumble strips then it's not engine miss. Usually a bad converter feels like that, like you're on train tracks!!
If needed, there's always rebuilt 4R70W trannys on Ebay for around $800 plus shipping, take a look. Never used them so don't know how good they are.
