studder
Just got the truck, checked the trans fluid it was bright red so I assume it has been changed recently don't know about the filter have no record to go by. I guess I can start by dropping the pan do you think it could be that simple?
You'd be surprised what a fluid change can correct on these trannys. Not knowing the history, I personally would feel better knowing that I changed it. Sometimes even repair shops put regular Mercon in. Be sure to drain the converter also, it's got a drain plug in it. Remove the round cover on the bell housing and turn the crank until you see the plug. All together, you need about 12 qts. of Mercon V . Also NAPA sells a product called Lubeguard thats really good for trans. shudder and smoother shifting, costs about $13 for a little 8oz. bottle! Good to add one with the fluid change, if you want to.

This is a common Ford problem and is a common topic on other threads. Shudder is a symptom of bad fluid or poor quality fluid. I had it also. Drained my torque converter & transmission pan. Refilled with 15.5 qts of Mobil 1 ATF, no more shudder. Since I have a 4r100, I use Mercon. I believe I saw that Valvoline makes a synthetic Mercon V, but don't hold me to that.
