Angry 2001 PSD Transmission

Well, we just got back from the Ford Dealer and with 42K miles the PSD with an automatic transmission lunched the transmission today. My understanding is the intermediate clutches in the tranny went out.

We have pulled a 16 foot trailer about 400 miles over the life of the truck and always with the truck out of overdrive.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

What is the code on the side of the tranny? Some of the early '01s had the mechanical diode and there were some problems with them.

I will have to wait until Monday to get the code on the tranny, since it is at the Ford Dealer. We took delivery of the truck the week of Thanksgiving in 2000, so it was a very early truck.

Thank you for your reply, and I will get the information as soon as I can!!

With that delivery date, it has to be one with a Mechanical Diode.

Well, I picked the truck up today and had a chance to talk with the mechanic who fixed it, sounded as if he really knew what he was doing.

That having been said, he told me that when he pulled the drain plug in the tranny there was so much material that he had to push it out of the way with a screw driver to get the material out of the way so that he could drain the fluid.

He indicated that a needle pack was never installed by Ford and that is what caused all of the trouble, second gear clutch pack, third gear clutch pack, new planitary gears, new needle bearings, etc.

Ford picked up the repairs, and I am grateful for that, but I have one question --- why was there no metal in the pan when they changed the transmission fluid at the same dealer at 34K miles?

Why did the transmission lunch in 7K miles after they serviced it??

What's the problem with mech diode?

I have a very early 2001 F150 4x4 as well and am interested in this issue with the mech diode.
What's the problem I should be concerned with? Will ford replace this if I point this out?
How can I tell if I have this mechanical diode?

Thanks
