Cool My 9.75 Went Ka-boom!!!!!!

HI!... Well after 4.5 years of punishment, my STERLING 9.75 rearend finally handed in the towel last week. Here's a few pics.

It's hard to see but the carrier it'self has many fractures in it, the main pin was slopy in it's bore, the teo smaller spider gears have huge chunks takin out of the teeth, and the clutch packs are totally destroyed. I even managed to tear off the "TABS" on the clutches themselves and many were cracked and warped.

Just a little background : Once a year no matter what the milage was, the diff fluid was changed only using REDLINE D4 and FORD MOTORSPORT friction modifier. NO spinning around corners or donuts were ever done. Just some wild burnouts! , and over 220 passes down the 1/4 mile + all the street racing. I upgraded to another FORD unit since I couldn't find a after market posi that had equal size spider gears. I laughed at the EATON posi unit when I actually saw it up close. No wonder they break. Well lets hope I can get another 4.5 years out of this one.

The Auburn unit doesn't stack up either? I spoke to a local guy who swears by it.

Cool

HI!... I have run DETROIT lockers and AUBURN pro's on the street and in the pass and were nothing but trouble. At the dragstrip they rule, but on the street I prefer a clutch disc style of traction lock.

Kinda hard to imagine why it broke. I mean you're such a grandma behind the wheel and all. JK.

Those clutches sure look hurt. Those long burnouts are the cause of those burned clutches though. Just because both wheels are spinning doesn't mean that they are spinning at the same speed. One wheel is always turning a little faster or slower than the other. Only in a true "locker" will they both spin at the same speed.
Try this trick.
When your truck is cold, drive it for 5 minutes then check the temp of the diff. Put your hand on the rear cover.
Now do a Neal burnout and check the temp. You will see the difference.

Neal, were you able to salvage the ring & pinion gears and what brand of gears are they?

Yeah we are all aware of his conservative driving habits.

HI!... LE PEW : Actually the ring and pinnion were the only two items in the whole rearend that some how managed to come out without a scratch on them. It's a miracle I think. I have 4.10 gears from PRESCISION GEARS.
