Strange Shudder

My 97 F150 has a 5.4 backed up by an E4OD and it has the weirdest problem that I can't quite figure out. When you take off the truck does great until you hit about 40 or 45 mph, then like someone hit a switch, it sets up a VERY annoying vibration. Sometimes it will linger up to 70 or 75 (at which speed it becomes extremly annoying). But here's the odd part, it doesn't always do it. It seems that once it gets warmer it's not as bad, but that could be my imagination. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Guys

Changing your tranny fluid will usually take care of this problem. It solved the problem on my 97.

Make sure you drain the torque converter also.

Go ahead and get a new filter while you're at it.

I trick I use is to drop the pan, change the filter, replace pan (after quits dripping), drain T/C and then add about 6 quarts MerconV - Crank motor and continue adding fluid slowly - check level often (you may have to wait a bit for the level to equilabrate) Fill to about half of the hash marks. Then drive the truck for 20 minutes around town with a lot of stop and go.
Then disconnect the line at the radiator (hot) and connect a clear hose and drop to a drain pain. Crank engine and idle in Park. ATf should run out into the pan. Keep adding fluid and keep an eye on the level until the fluid looks the same coming out as it does going in. Ensure proper level then shut off motor. Reconnect line into radiator and crank the engine again. Double check for correct level (add slowly). Test drive again.
Recheck ATF level.

That flushes that tranny out good, but it wastes a little bit of ATF. Oh yeah, make sure you are on level ground when you check the fluid level.

By the way, if that is an e4od use regular Mercon and not MerconV transmission fluid.

Is there really any harm in using mercon V in an E4OD?

AAMCO Mercon V synthetic blend says it is a replacement for Mercon, Mercon III, & Mercon V.

Amsoil also has a totally universal ATF. It replaces all the Dexrons & the Mercons.

I think all Mercon V ATF's are synthetic or synthetic blends.

Only if you want the transmission to last a long time.

Data that I can't share with you.

You're welcome to believe me or not, but I certainly wouldn't run MERCON V in my E4OD or 4R100!

What fluids would you suggest for the following transmissions?
E40D
4R70
4R100

I have the E40D with a severe shudder and am about to have the trans flushed to try and get rid of this problem. I was looking at Mercon V but I'm confused by your statements. Can I use any synthetics, like Mobil 1? Or should I stick with the Mercon recommended in the manual? I have 102k and I'm hoping to get another 100k w/o rebuilding the trans. I do very little heavy towing, mostly hauling stuff for my house, wood, mulch, tractor, etc. I don't want to pop the big $$$ for trans work anytime soon. The reason I asked about the other trans is that I have friends with those.

Thanks!

E4OD and 4R100 use MERCON fluid. It cannot use MERCON V or any fluid that has both MERCON and MERCON V ratings.

The 4R70W uses MERCON V.

You can use synthetic or conventional, it's your choice, but make sure whatever fluid you use has the proper rating. There are conventional and synthetic MERCON fluids available. I happen to think that Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is the best MERCON fluid you can buy.

Valvoline Durablend
