fluid change
fluid change
Now that I see that my 02 f-150 with the 4r70w has no plug in the torque converter how do I get the fluid out of it?
Not really thrilled about the flush as I dont want the shavings from the pan getting washed back into the valve body.
Anyone else come across this brillant motorcraft enginering feat?

Well that's just great news... I haven't looked at mine yet but was planning on swapping the pan soon and refilling with Amsoil ATF. My bellhousing has the rubber grommet plug thing where you go through to get to the drain plug. How did you determine for sure you didn't have it? Wonder if these shops can flush with your own fluid if you bring it to them?? If you could trust them to put it in??
I have the rubber grommet as well. Had a buddy bump the ignition while I layed under there with my maglite and there isnt one. He has an 01 expedition with the 4.6 and we checked his and he does have one so it must be a 01-02 model year change. I hope someone had some good advise beacuse this sucks in my opinion! Gordon
Try this procedure to change your own ATF without a torque converter drain plug. Ford stoped installing drain plugs near the start of the 2002 model year.

That's a bum. I suppose drilling and tapping your own is outta the ?.
You know unless you are really tough on the tranny, you could prolly get by with just draining and filling the pan every year. You would only get about half the fluid, but you'd be doing it twice as often as recommended (or more). That's what I do with my wife's van. It has a pan plug but no the TC plug. it gets about 15,000 mi/ year.
