LS Axles
Hello all,
I am getting ready to order a 250 SD Crew. I will be towing a TT (to be purchased in the near future) with GVWR of between 6500 to 7000 lbs. After reading a lot of great postings I have been reassured that the V10 will be more than adequate for my needs. What are the advantages of the LS as opposed to "regular" axles? What is the advantages/differences between the 3.73LS and the 4.10LS? Dealer recommends the 3.73LS.
Pros and cons??
Thanks
MG

The LS will keep you from spinning one wheel in a muddy campsite and going nowhere. You don't say if you have a 4x2 or 4x4 but the LS will help in either case and the option is cheap.
As far as gear ratio's go, you should get at least the 4.10 and maybe even 4.30. Don't even consider the 3.73's - you will never get the engine into its power band at highway speed. The idea is to get the engine revs close to the torque peak at highway speed, so that the engine has lots of power for towing.
The 3.73's make sense for the PSD, since its torque peak is at about 1800 rpm but the V10 has to get to 3000 rpm for its peak.

Get the limited slip, just remember that it's called "limited" for a reason. If you really think your gonna need more than don't get LS and add on an aftermarket one later. This is a much more expensive route and for most people, Ford's version of the limited slip works just fine. That's what I've got on my truck and rarely do I need more than that. (sometimes I would "like" more but I've still managed to get myself out of sticky situations with what I've got

The decision to purchase a 4x4 is more of an "cuz I want it" than "cuz I need it". If you've never been stuck with a 4x2 in the application that you're intending for your new truck -- then it's more of a "want" issue.
If kept for a few years, the 4x4 will hold it's value -- but if kept for a long time, it can nag you with simple but high-cost maintenance.
4x4's are high-value in some parts of the country -- and add no value in others. A trip thru the want-ads will give you an indication.
There is virtually no penalty for gas mileage for a 4x4 -- unless you're in 4wd -- where it's very noticeable -- however, if you need 4x4, then it doesn't matter since you'd be sitting home without it.
I got it simply cuz it's cool!
Enjoy,
