Towing without equalizer OK?
Towing without equalizer OK?
Does anyone know or have any input on weather or not it would be safe to tow a travel trailer with a dry weight of 4900lbs and hitch weight of 650lbs a short sistance like a 45 min drive? You see Im looking a getting a used trailer but need to get an equalizer set up and it wont be here for a couple weeks and the trailer might be ready before then, just wondering if I could tow it home or should I get someone else to do it.
My truck is an 09, FX4 super crew short box.

without equalizer set up? hOw much do you think the jeep and trailer weigh? do you have helper springs or air bags?
Nope she squats the back end down and away I go. I'm not sure on the weight. My guess is the jeep is about 3000 maybe a little less and the trailer I'm not sure. It's just a regular flat 18' utility trailer with no sides. Not sure honestly, take a long shot guess and say maybe 1500.
So that's 4250-4500 give or take a few.

I towed my travel trailer home from the dealer without a WD hitch; about 30 miles. It weights about 5,000 and has a tongue weight of 500 lbs. Tow vehicle is an FX4 4WD. I can guarantee you that you will be "swimmy". You will probably be OK as long as you keep your speed to no more than 45 mph and make sure your trailer weight is baised toward the front.
Since the 2009 Tow Guide says 500# maximum undistributed tongue weight and 1100# distributed tongue weight, it's your call. You may consider loading as much as you can in the rear of the trailer to offset the tongue weight, remove spare and LP off the tongue, and travel the smoothest road possible.
