Would i have problems with towing a (i think) 20" camper with the 4.9 I6? that is other than not being able to pass anybody . my friend offered to let me use his camper for a weekend

96 f150 4.9l 5speed 4x4

about how heavy is the 20' camper? do you have e4od, or 5spd? what rear gears do you have? do you have rear LSD? i've towed a 6,500lb tractor on a 3,000-4,000lb trailer = 9,500-10,000lbs with a 96 4.9L 5spd 3.55s LSD, that truck was working!

Well, 20 inches is pretty small - I doubt you'd even notice it back there!

But seriously...
I've towed a 30' travel trailer several times, and you have to be prepared & practise, but the engine can certainly handle it. I've also towed more than 10Kip.

Look up the axle code on the door plate.

Air the tires to the maximum stamped on the sidewall.

Well, with the Mazda tranny (M5OD) - if thats what you have - the towing limit is officially 3500#. However, I believe ManualF150 has towed a lot more with his V6 and Mazda 5 speed. The trans code on the door is M. It's gonna be a real dog with those 3.31's. If you aren't going to be in mountains you should be okay, take it real easy on the clutch.

Load it properly so you have enough weight on the back end to keep the truck tires on the road; keep the trailer as light as possible, and keep its weight JUST forward of its axle(s); maintain your truck's brakes, suspension, & lights; use towing mirrors; keep your mind on the road, your driving, & the traffic around you (tie the kids to the roof if necessary); think ahead of the truck & behind the trailer; & know what you're going to do WHEN (not "if") something unexpected happens.

I do OK towing with a 4.9L, NP435, 3.08s & 32s. I won't win any drag races, but I can break any speed limit, even towing 10Kip.
