Hitch ball mount suggestions

Hey all,

I got a 2000 4x4 off road that sits kinda high in the back, from the factory. I was just wondering what drop I'd need for a ball mount towing a car trailer. The trailers in question aren't mine and are far away to measure, but from someone's experiences maybe? I already got some weight distributing bars with the round ends so maybe a hitch with that too. Locally I don't see too much, but have found a few that are pintle styled with a ball so maybe I'll go that route. I still would like one that can use the bars too if needed. I've seen some kits on ebay or other places, but they are the whole thing, all I want is the WD hitch ball mount part, any ideas on drops in inches I'd need or places that have just the ball mount for the WD setup? Yes, I did search and found alot but not too close to what I need I guess.

You should be fine towing with the factory height.

When you mention car trailers, are you talking about towing a car or some of those tiny little trailers that some tow behind cars?

Most trailer ball couplers are 24-26" to the top of the inside on a level trailer.....which would translate to 24-26" to the top of a ball mounted on the tow vehicle. BUT, once you load the trailer expect the trailer to take the truck down. A good rule of thumb is to add 2" over top of level trailer ball mount weight which would make the correct height to the top of the ball at 28-28".

It would be a car trailer, like 18 ft flatbed style. I just wasn't sure of the approx. height of a level car trailer, thinking they kinda sit low anyways. Any good sources of ball mounts online? I've been looking a bit, really nothing unless an approx drop is known or you want a whole weight distribution kit which all I need from that is the ball mount for the round bars. Thanks fellas.

My bad, I found just the "head" for the weight distribution as well as the adjustable shank and stuff, not cheap but wtf is anymore. I think I'll look local too now that I know they are sold seperate.

I recommend an adjustable drop hitch. I have a Putnam, but there are a couple other brands as well like Rapid Hitch.

I pull a 5000 lb tractor on a 18' car trailer, 2" drop with a 2 5/16" ball works great. However I have enough room to adjust the squat of the truck by moving the tractor back and forth on the trailer, usually the truck sits about level to just under. You may not be able to do that depending on what you are hauling and how heavy it is and how it is balanced.

Well, I'd be pulling a 64 Ford Galaxie, which is pretty nose heavy, but on a trailer seems ok, or remains kinda neutral balanced. I just always thaught a 4" drop would be a average drop. I'm thinking of going an adjustable WD hitch but in case not was wondering a fixed drop amount. Thanks for the 411 and keep it comin'.

I checked through some of you're pics, very nice, and saw a pic of one, looks like a 4" drop so I take it that is not the one you are using in the pic towing the stang (nice car btw). I think I'll try the 2" drop.

I have seen adjustable height receiver too, that have bolt holes that let you move the actual ball mount up and down for different weights.
