Legal Tow Rating?

According to Ford literature the towing capacity of my 07 Harley F150 AWD is 5100# if it was any other F150 with 5.4 4X4 and 3.73s it would be 9100#. What is the limiting factor? Is it the 22" rims or the AWD system? If its the rims can I legally tow more if I cahnge the rim and tires.

Gotta be the AWD wheels and tires aren't likely to make any difference, unless they are P rated tires.

It's a bunch of things from "P" tires, softer suspension, different auto transmission programming, performance tuned fuel maps/ECM for upper end power not lower end torque as well as the AWD transfer case.

The F150 Harley Editions just weren't meant as a tow vehicle.

#1 problem would probably be from the full time AWD system. Since it uses a center diff, that may not be rated for enough load capacity to handle the towing. In addition, there's some extra heat and drivetrain stress from that full time AWD system.

What are you trying to tow?

A 24 ft Roadmaster enclosed trailer. Not loaded real heavy, at most 2-3 ATVs and hunting gear.

I was in the same boat this year. I basically had a 07HD on order until I found out about the tow cap. The running gear on the truck is out of the Navigator ( that is rated to tow 8000+) I believe it is mostly the wheels/tires and suspension and the lack of a stock tranny cooler that add up to the under rated tow rating. However Ford or the dealers I spoke to would not confirm this.

My boat weights over 6000 LBS and I was sure the truck would be able to pull it but it was to risky for me as the GVW would have been way over the spec for the truck.

For me the chance of the liability if we were ever in a accident with the trailer was to much and we ordered a Lariat instead. I would weight your trailer and then think about it before you do it.

Thats why I didnt get an HD.

Even with my 9100 # tow capacity I can only tow 5k without a load distribution hitch, which boats dont use, only travel trailers do.

Read the fine print. Glad my boats under 5k or I would have to go to a F250.
