Heavy Duty Clutch and Pressure Plate Upgrade

I have a 4.9L - 300cu/in 6 cyl 5 sp 1995 F150. Is it possible to upgrade the clutch and pressue plate to a heavy duty model to be used for towing?

Most cities have a clutch re-man shop. It will probably not be known to most residents but specialized auto/truck repair shops will sometimes order a special clutch set up or a have a clutch rebuilt if one is not readily available.

The friction material for the disc is almost as diverse as brake linings. It comes in various materials from organic, semi-metallic, carbon-metallic and ceramic. The ceramic button discs are by far the most agressive and will have little to no slip and loooonnnggg life, but they will destroy a plate and fly wheel if it is slipped on purpose. My experience with those is they are either on or off..no in-between. If the PRM is too low when it locks up the vehicle will buck. Also, a pressure plate can be made to be stronger (more pressure)or have centrifical weights to help it lock tighter at a given RPM.

Keep in mind that these clutch re-build shops usually don't install a clutch, just make 'em. If your replacing your clutch pressure plate and disc rememeber to replace your throw out bearing, pilot bearing, clutch slave and have that fly wheel turned too. Invest in a clutch alignment tool if you decide to do it yourself...it will make life infinately easier.

Long story short...yes you can get a clutch more set up for towing
