Sync reliability

I'm in the same boat my 2011 mustang had some voice recognition issues every once in a while and the steering wheel buttons sometimes didnt work but I traded it in on a 2011 FX2 and this thing doesnt work at all now. Steering wheel buttons dont work for changing the song voice recognition hasnt worked in three days I have to use my iPhone to start the call and then it comes through the speakers but a total piece of crap I am extremely dissappointed. I read yesterday that a software fix was coming via a thumbdrive but it was only for MyFord Touch users I hope its for Sync as well.
Has anybody talked to Ford directly to find out if they are doing anything.

They default to blaming the phone... but since your problems started with the truck I think they are full of you know what.
One dealership seemed to have an "enthusiast" about sync working in their service dept and he said that Ford has patches for just about everything that they roll up in to a monthly update. If you can find the right dealer with the right technician then maybe they can fix you up.
Problem is... for the dealer to work with Ford directly on this requires being without your truck for a day minimum every time you want them to hack at it.
That's just not an option for me... so I just try to get the monthly updates.
Read a few articles saying that Ford will be releasing a "major" update starting next year. It's supposed to fix a lot of features. We'll see.

Sync
I have had my 11 for about 4 months now. I have been having the same problem with the sync service and system. I have done as the dealer has told me and reset everything. Still does not work. They told me it was my phone...well I got a new phone and a new USB drive and still having the same problem. Oh yea and their "enthusiast" don't know his @...from a hole in the ground. You'd think with the system being out now for a couple of years they would have taken care of this issue. I'm going to the dealer and telling them to shove it where the sun don't shine.

Update on Sync issues. Called the dealership that I bought the truck from and spoke to the salesman really good guy but anyway. He gave me the My Ford Sync website and you can do the updates yourself if you have a computer and an empty thumb drive with morte than 2 gigs. Just go to the website enter your vin number and you download the update straigth to the thumbdrive and print the instructions off the site as well and go to your truck put the thumb drive into the usb port in the truck and follow the printed instructions was really easy and all my problems are gone. Just google Ford Sync and it should pull the site up for you. Hope this helps everybody with sync issues.
In June I purchased 2011 FX2 with the SYNC system and the Sony “Premium Audio” option. I have been living with it for going on 7 months now and it’s about to be over -- FOREVER. The entire SYNC/Sony/Microsoft system is coming out and being replaced by an 800W all-Alpine system. Any remaining SYNC functionality will be just system monitoring stuff that plays back through AUX audio on the Alpine HU.
I knew when I bought the truck that I would be upgrading the audio system at some level, but I didn’t think the Ford/Sony/Microsoft SYNC system would turn out to be so totally, utterly, completely useless and non-functional. I only hung onto it as long as I did because of the time needed to come up with $2200.00 for the Alpine “final solution”.
Specific details? Where do I start?
1.) SYNC system totally hangs and reverts back to only AM radio functionality about 50% of the time I start the truck
2.) Refuses to recognize a new 160GB iPod Classic on USB2 about half the time, apparently because the number of songs on it (3000+) exceeds the memory capability of the SYNC system to index and build audio (speech rec) commands
3.) Bluetooth phone operations require manually switching my phone to BT audio on the first inbound call every time truck is started
4.) Will not play some MP3 files off memory stick in USB1 and also, seems to require all songs be placed in a SINGLE directory which is insane
5.) Sony “Premium” audio SQ on is a joke. I knew this when I previewed it at the dealer before I bought the truck but deserves mention. Horrible mid-range spike that cannot be EQ’ed out. Muddy, boomy bass from SW in back. No real volume (wattage) to speak of. Just awful.
6.) Other misc. annoyances – for example resets volume back to about 20% every time I switch to a new playlist, song, artist, etc. or do anything involving the speech rec commands. Setting to USB2 device doesn’t “stick” and has to be reset every time I power up HU. Haven’t tried the limited NAV functions the dealer told me about (who cares?). Tried updating the system ONCE via USB, didn’t work (yes I followed the instructions verbatim). Etc., etc…
Altogether, the Ford SYNC system and Sony “Premium” audio in the truck is a total FAIL, the worst I have ever seen in ANY vehicle and Ford should be issuing a recall and reimbursing customers for what they paid for it as part of the vehicle purchase. Not holding my breath waiting for that.
My take-away, "lesson learned" from this whole experience is -- never, ever, purchase ANY Ford vehicle that has a SYNC system installed with any expectation of being able to actually use the SYNC system for it's intended purpose. Going further, never, EVER buy any Ford vehicle with SYNC system installed unless the dealer is willing to provide a refund of the cost of the SYNC system, deducted from the final negotiated price of the vehicle.
Interesting thing is – other than the SYNC/Sony/Microsoft debacle, I REALLY like everything about this truck. And when I get this 800W all-Alpine system installed in a couple weeks it will (finally) be perfection. Looking forward to that.

I have a 2011 Fx4 Ecoboost with Nav. I have had a couple issue with plugging my Ipod into the USB. It seems that if I unplug the Ipod when not in use it does fine. But if I leave it plugged in it will go about two weeks before it locks up my sync. When I reset by removing the fuse all is well. When I inquired with the dealer I was told the sync system does not like apple products. It surprises me that ford cannot get this software right especially with the number of Apple customers out there. Bottomline, my sync works great 99% of the time and love the other feature of the system you simply cannot find in any other OEM system.
For those who are having trouble with the "SYNC system totally hangs and reverts back to only AM radio functionality about 50% of the time I start the truck" issue, note that there is a Ford TSB -- 11-10-22 -- that when applied, changes the power-on sequencing performed by the Audio Control Module (ACM) so this issue no longer occurs. For me, at least, it's completely fixed the problem since I had it applied the week before Christmas '11.

Salsa n chips I couldn't agree with you more. As soon as the new line of double din alpine head units come out the sync is getting kicked to the curb. I have already put in alpine door speakers and amp. The dealer is no help on this. They are ordering a new part but of course it's on back order.
Pong
It looks as though SYNC is destined to become the "PONG" of OEM mobile computing platforms.
Ford may have been first but they are failing horribly at supporting the SYNC deployment.
The best thing Ford could do for the SYNC system is open it up to development. Since they won't... then others will pick up the slack.

I have the nav in my truck where my wife has the ford mytouch. I have had one issue in my truck with sync interfacing with my iPod by none since resetting the system. My wife's edge with mytouch is constantly having issues. So much that we are pursuing the lemon law buy back with it. I doubt it will work but we have the option to try so we are.
