Looking for good shocks NOT made by Bilstein
How do you get in contact with them to have that done? What was the cost? I am interested in getting a set...
well, if a shock truly was locked up so bad that upon compression it actually broke the shock mount instead of compressing I would think they are some serious rust etc issues, or some very poorly made/reinforced shock mounts. Secondly, anyone who installs a shock with-out the protective cover over the rod and seals, well, that should answer itself. So take credit for what you did, which if one has ANY automotive actual knowledge or backround knows unless it's a trailer queen or a never to see the elements show ride of course one needs to install things like shocks correctly. How long did you think that precision machined shock rod was going to stay pristene and without corrosion left open to the air and elements?.I would have given it like two weeks or one good trip 4-wheelin". On the outside.
Sure we all have the right to inform/warn update other people about our experiences with companies an the problems we sometimes encounter replacing or repairing stuff, but as a truly non intrest in the deal member, and also having been the owner of a few shops with over 35 years of automotive experience I will say, shame on you!, Shame for doing what you did, shame on you for even having the nut to call and demand replacement or for someone else to pay for what you did, and third, for putting such a post up in public! I mean, it would be fair to ask the question if others think you did the right install or not, and blah to anyone who says that leaving the boots off is any form of a correct way, and second, for showing your*** by deriding that company in public for something that YOU did wrong and crying foul when someone else refuses to pay for it.
Now, if you'd stated your case with-out the b/s of deriding the well-known company then yea, maybe peeps would listen and lament, but sorry, you maybe just learned a very cheap lesson. What if you were doing like 65 down the interstate, hit a pothole, busted a shock loose and ran over someone's family and killed their kids, all because ya thought the shocks looked cool with-out the boots installed. That would be alot more than shame on you, that would be a daily a**whooping in the pen for life, or worse.
I dont mean to be mean spirited, or even making fun of you, we ALL learn such lessons, and in reality maybe, just maybe, this one will save you a ton of grief in the future. I was taught by my old man that if ya haven't broke or busted something ya really aint ever done a whole lot, and I still believe that to this day.
Just like real racing, I mean, take nascar, whom among us has the ability to spend 3-4 hundred K a year on camshafts, and then the nut to toss them all away if they don't do what we need? Sh*t like that is why we bench race, share, people take the time to make things like this (and other) websites. SO: Just share it, take the blame and move on, does evey single person in our society Have to blame someone else for eveything?.geesh guy, I mean sit back and read what ya just posted and tell me for real, are ya even serious here?
and if ya cannot take a loss on a set of shocks ya probasbly better be investing in something to make some dough and leave the 4wheeling to those who can afford it. Hell I can't anymore, 80-100k rigs are way outta my play money range these days.
Also everyone knows bilstein shocks are at their best on lowered or road racing types vehicle applications, not 4wheeling. And anyone who gets more than 20k miles of real 4 wheeling on a set of shocks has done got 3 times their monies worth as far as I am concerned. Thats why they make FOX, and such, rebioldable, external capacity REAL 4X4 shocks, lol, IMHO.

Umm I'm not sure if you knew this or not, but running the boots just traps more moisture inside and can corrode them even faster. And bilstein states they are for lifted offroad applications which would entitle a 4x4 shock. Fox's and other external capacity shocks are made for different reasons than just be corrosion resistant. The external capacity is there too help cool down the shock so it doesn't blow out hence why they are mainly used on pre-runners.
TMOY2000...You sir are a %#$&ing troll and I can't believe I'm about to even respond to you. But we should at least say welcome and congratulations on making a complete fool of yourself on one of your very first post. You really don't have a clue about shocks...that's not a rhetorical statement, that's a fact. You highlighted that fact in your reply.
This statement probably should win the award for dumbest quote of the year and that's about all I have to say about that. Bilstein builds some of the most formidable external triple bypass shocks money can buy; maybe you'd know that if you'd ever picked up a Bilstein catalog or looked around at some race trucks or trophy trucks. I was going to post a link for you on their 9100 series shocks, but naaaa...you go look for it yourself.
Shock mounts, especially stock ones, are also not designed to take those types of loads. They are made to hold a shock in place, not support tons of weight or handle huge impacts like may be delivered from a broken or fully compressed shock. They shouldn't be easily broken, but it's not by any means a stretch. There doesn't have to be an underlying problem (like rust) for them to break from a hard enough impact.
And if you think those goofy rubber boots with holes in them provides any level of protection for that hardened steel shaft, or contributed to his shock failure in any way, then you really don't have a clue about that subject either...or how a quality shock is designed with a scraper ring to clean the rod during compression to protect the seals and internals, and on, and on. Theres tons of us on here with thousands upon thousands of miles on shocks with no boots without a single problem. I challenge you to show us one case of a shock failure or damage solely contributed to not running a boot...I'd like to see it. I still wouldn't buy it, but you can show us anyways for the entertainment value. Go somewhere else dude and stop embarrassing yourself.

how did we go from no boots on the shocks to killing someone to 400k camshafts to 80k built buggies to lowered vehicles?
let me guess your ase certified

lol....well yea.....was certified at age 17, spent 12 years at Speedway Automotive, 8 time world record NHRA Super Stock record holder SS/J, unlimited late model racer for 17 years through-out the midwest, then south to Texas, have owned and operated 3 shops, built world of outlaw sprint cars, raced from oskaloosa to knoxville to riverside in k/city to div 5 nhra, back to the dirt in devil's bowl to wichita falls super track (before they paved it over, Super Stock world series 50k winner two years in a row) to the Texas mile. Yea maybe I am certified, lol, and yes, that was and remains my humble opinion. I remain stating that for a shock to be so locked up it breaks the shock mount off on a street truck more than likely there is alot more amiss than just the blanket statement "bilstein sux"
And as for the thoughtful replies, again in ya'll's humble opinion's I would hope, as I am sure so many of you have actually raced professionally, I would hope so.
And yes, Bilstein makes many types of shocks, but the mail order (summit, jegs) type most use or install are not the hi-dollar custom builds that are available, of which I am so very sure this guy used, locked up, or whatever his story was. He has the right to his opinion also, of course, as do we all.
Personally, I attach boots as directed, clamped and zip-tied, and have never, even on the mud drag buggies I have built and worked on, taken one open and had it full of water nor rusted til locked up, so, yes in that regard I do believe I would be rightly named a newby.
Now smile, remain smug as needed, enjoy your day and dude, take better care of your ride.

Here's a quote direct from the bilstein website
"The 5100 Series offers traditional Bilstein technology with applications for lifted trucks, Jeeps and prerunners."
Now, I feel like if they said it could be used for prerunners it shouldn't have done that cause that can cause a serious beating on them with or without a boot. Would I use them on a prerunner? No. However its stated that they can be used on them. But what do I know I just a drive a truck, I don't race them.
