My 01 has the 5.4, 3.55 gears and I run 35's. If I did any heavy towing/hauling, I would have stuck with 33's. As it is, my performance is "OK" but nothing to brag about.

Would I have to put gears on it if I did, or could I get by without hurting anything?

it makes your transmission and engine work harder if your have inadequate gears for your tire size. That being said, I have had 35's and 3.55 gears with a superchips tuner for awhile with no problems. Its just isn't that fast...kind of a slug. My truck had around 100,000 miles on it when it got lifted and 35's. Now it has 133,000 without issues...other than a new set of u-joints since then, but that was due to high mileage and the steeper driveshaft angle with the lift.

I agree it's the tranny that takes a beating. With a 4.6 I would go with the 4.56 or better yet the 4.88's with a custom tuned programmer.

For DD use I had no problems and I,m doing the same thing again. If its anything more or combination there of, look into gears and more serious mods
