My options for going bigger?

Sounds to me like the guy is BS'in you saying its harder after the suspension lift. Nothing changed except altitude. Like thump said, anyone working in a garage has lifts (not jacks!) and if he has done body lifts before he should have either an attachment on the lift's arms or a special lift just to raise the body off. $1000 is mighty expensive but looking around sounds like that is just about the average. If you are mechanicly inclined, and maybe have a buddy with a shop... you can do it yourself. They are EXTREMELY easy!! Just takes lots of time and patience (measuring and adjusting constantly).
Now, unless you are a pavement pounder (i.e. never see dirt) i wouldnt recommend going any bigger than 35" tires on IFS. It just isn't built to handle the rigors of big tires plus off-road abuse. Maybe think about swapping in a solid axle? Then you can go as big as your imagination. Just a thought to consider.
P.S. Thump: I have the same problem with my ..... chevy (i know I know) but all i do is drive down to the shop in some goofy looking street tires (and leave the 40's back at home). The first time I drove down (on the 40's...not thinking) came up to the garage door and couldn't fit. Let some air out (down to about 6psi) and was able to squeeze in (scrapped the roof a bit). and those 42's sure would be SWEET!
