Shock installation on 97-03

I'm well overdue for new shocks and I've decided on Bilstein's for the most part. However, I was wondering how difficult it is to install shocks on these trucks. Are there any surprises I should be aware of? On the rear, I noticed the top shock bolt looks like a PITA to get at. Is there a special trick for it? I've already tried searching and came up empty handed. Any help?

in not that hard to do. i have a 2000 f150. on the top just push the plastic inner fender wells out of the way. for the top nut i used a 13/16 sparkplug socket its actually a 21mm and under the soil spring bucket there is a jam nut which is also 21mm. hold the jam nut and start loosening the mut on top. them on the very bottom under the lower control arm is two half inche bolts just take them out and the shock should come out. then just put it all back together. i have never replaced the ones on the back b/c i am waiting on my lift kit to come in. i hope this helps you.

For the back ones, it is best to have a ratcheting box end wrench. I could never get a socket and ratchet in that little space. If it will not come loose at the top, be prepared to cut off the post prtion to get it off. That is what I had to do with one of mine. Also on the Bilsteins, if they are still the same, you will need an allen wrench that fits the top of the post to keep it from turning while tightening the nut. Also, use some anti-sieze on the post in case you ever need to work on them again. You really don't need it on the bottom bolts, just the top posts, front and rear.
