Grease fittings on ball joints?

Hi.

Saw a set of Moog and Spicer upper control arm/ball joint assemblies... it seems that no matter who makes 'em, the uppers DO NOT have grease fittings, while the lowers (from Moog and Spicer), do.

Something to do with the upper ball joints not being load-bearing units ???

What's up with that?

cheers!

Question

Speaking of ball joints (and universal joints), the owners service manual specifies that the ball jonts and universal joints be greased at 30K miles and multiples of 30K miles thereafter. I can't locate any grease fittings on these components on my 01 Excursion. How do the Ford Dealerships grease them at the specified intervals?????????? THANKS!

I just picked up the grease needles today at NAPA. You get two in a package and the part number is 700-1193. Cost was $6.

You have received incorrect information my good man...I just installed new Moog upper control arms/ball joints and I can vouch that they are greasable. Very nice, heavy duty units too. Made such an improvement in driveability I wish I had replaced them along time ago, even if you don't NEED them.

You carefully pierce the boot to inject the grease.

I don't know what your talking about. I just Installed MOOG Upper Ball Joints / Control Arms and they have Grease fittings. It was on a 1997 but I doubt the 2000 is any different.

I got mine at a Local Parts store (SAM's Auto Supply), they are affiliated with the "Parts Plus" network.

None of the chain stores in my area carry MOOG parts so SAMS got my buisness and saved me some money.

Doug is correct. Just get on the phone and find a local parts house that stocks MOOG. Typically it will be some of the bigger, most popular independant shops or small regional chains.

Closure...

Hey guys.

OK.

I returned my Spicer upper control arms/ball joints 55-1033, 55-1034, and replaced with: Moog K8722T, K8724T.

Spicers were not greasable, and the Moogs were, much to the parts guy's surprise. ( He was the one who first showed me illustrations of each). However, the Spicer uppers are far better built (the arms are even polished and clear-coated for god's sake)!

As for the lowers the Spicer joints sure look more robust to me , so I kept those - and they are greasable.

So, installing those along with dynamatting the entire cab is pretty much gonna chew up the weekend, boys.

Thanks for all the posts and help.

Cheers!
