Clunking over bumps

Hello All,
I have a 2001 Scab 4x4 with ORP. I have this clunk noise with my truck since about 30k miles. Brought it to the dealer and they say they could not find anything wrong. I have 68k now and since then I have (all in one shot) replaced all 4 shocks, add-a-leaf in the rear, new U-bolts for the axle, and 33" tires. Clunk still persists. Here are my symptoms:

1. Seems pronouced more in cold weather.
2. I can sometime feel it in the floor boards.
3. Seems to happen at slow speed <25MPH.
4. Occurs during bumps while turning and while making turns between 15 and 25MPH.
5. Sounds like its coming from the rear, but sometimes it sounds like its from the front too.
6. Its only on LEFT hand turns.

I have checked everything I can think of suspension wise. Everything is tight. I have read numerous other posts on similar problems, and tried the fixes to no avail.

Does anyone else have this problem? Do you find a fix??

Thanks for the help,
Rich

Dont know if this will help but you might take a real close look at your sway bar links. I just replaced mine yesterday. One was broke(couldn't hardly tell by looking at it) and the other was ok but replaced anyway. Surely though if your problem were the same it would have been figured out by now.

Anyhow, so far I haven't heard (or felt) anymore "thunk&pop" noises.

Good Luck

Unhappy

i have the same issue with a 98 4x4.but the clunk does it from a stop to start or some times on turns.it definately sounds like it is coming from the rear.i tried new u joints, shocks had it in and the tranny guy said it sounds like its coming from the transfer case.or it could be axle wind up. im confused also when nobody can seem to figure it out.

The sway bar links could be the problem, that would explain the noise...today it sounds like its coming from the front end...this is very annoying. I will ahve to wait and see, its snowing here and I dont have a garage.

I have a steady loud clink sound coming from underneath the drivers side 2000 F150. It occurs when driving under 10 mph, but not when the mechanic drives it. I've had the dealer look 4 times when in for other service, but found nothing. Has been happening for the last 2 years. Replaced ball joints, tie rods, shocks, brakes and rotors. Still clinks.

I'll have to check the SWAY BAR LINKS and get back to the forum. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

zski128,

I got the exact same symptoms just as you described. Started as soon as winter came around. I crawled under in the snow the other day but found nothing. I think I will pull the truck over to my neighbors garage and take a look at the sway bar. It does makes sense because it is deffinately not the drive train or brakes. The truck drives perfect and straight. I have a 2000 F150 4WD V6 Manual.

looseness

Make certain that the pitman arm is tight to the shaft, and that the steering box mounting bolts haven't worked loose. Have someone inside the vehicle moving the wheel back and forth while the other is on the ground checking for any play. It's rare, but it can happen.

My problem was a bad ball joint. Jacked up the front end and pulled on the wheel. I could feel and see the play pretty easily.

Good luck

yea check the upper ball joint on the spindle, that would explain the noise when you turn because the ball joint is turning as well and lifts up if there is any play at all. Just tighten that casle nut down, but be sure to take the cotter pin out first =0) THIS WAS MY PROBLEM~

Your ball joint was loose to the point of rotating??? If so, buy a new one and have the knuckle machined or replaced if the receptacle (hole) is altered in shape. This may require a machine shop to detect. If your truck is still under warranty, have Ford foot the bill.

I know I have a SD, but I had a very anoying clunk coming from the front end. Drove me nuts, looked at this, looked at that, pulled on this, tugged on that, nothing was loose. Got under it the other day and found that the lower shock bolts were not quite tight enough. Put an impact on them and the "clunk" was gone. Just because you can't move things yourself, doesn't mean that a 6000# truck can't. If it is only on left hand turns, I would check the tierods. Maybe one is getting worn out on the left side. Is there any kind of vibration when turning left? Maybe check the CV shafts for tightness.

Hope this helps

I finally took a closer look while I was changing the oil and found the bolt come out of the sway bar on the passenger side. I have no doubt this is the source of the noise. Now I got to find me one of them bolts.

I got the bolt and plastic sleeve that goes between the A-arm and sway bar and installed it. The clunking noise is now gone.

I have a 98 4x4 that Seems to do that same clunking, but mine only seems to come from rear, and only when im turning at an uneven angle. Does it when i turn either way but only happends on the right side, ive sat in passenger seat and had another drive and can feel the clunk beneath me, but it doesnt seem to be coming from the front. Did this when i first got it, and still does it after i completly re did suspension with lift kit. Any help?
