Unhappy Steering squeeks

97' f150 s/c 4x4
I get a annoying squeek if im at a stop and turn my steering wheel either direction. Sounds like a rubber squeek. I tried wd/40 on the bushings but no luck... any suggestions

I think it has something to do with the power steering pump or drive belt.
Check these first.

Angry

54regcab,

Igot under the truck and had my daughter turn the wheel back and forth. the noise (very noticable and annoying as hell) is coming from the boot area next to the tires. Is there a u joint that is greasable inside the boot?

My '97 SC developed the same noise. When I took it to the dealer and let them listen to it, they replaced the pitman arm under warranty.

Cool

I went to my dealer about the squeak. The replaced all the tie rod ends and that didn't cure it. Next they replaced the pitman arm even though I told them that the pitman was the problem the first time. Squeak is gone and I have all new tie rods, a new pitman arm, and an alignment.

Ron

Daren Dude

sorry to take so long to reply to your post, contact your local ford dealer and tell the service advisor of your problem. they are probably already aware of this problem.

94Fan,
I asked the mech if they re alingment, he said not necessary because it was part of the center link. It drives fine, no pulling or anything

Unfortunately, my steering squeak developed at 41,000 miles (no extended warranty). Even though it's not real expensive to get the Pitman arm replaced, if you're cheap like me, you can purchase a "needle" fitting for your grease gun, and squirt some grease into the rubber boot on the pitman (the problem is that there is no fitting on the old model). It has worked for me for several months now, even though it is probably not a good long term solution.
