Question Steering clunk when rocking steering wheel

I have a '97 F-150 2WD V-6 out of warranty.

Recently whenever I rock the steering wheel slightly right to left I get this annoying banging/clunking noise coming from my front suspension that you can also feel through the steering colum.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I complained about this same thing to my dealer and was told it was because the steering shaft is collapsable. the lower shaft slides inside the upper shaft with a boot covering it. If you reach inside the engine compartment through the left front wheel well you can grab the shaft and rock it back and forth. I thought this was the cause of my front suspension clunking noises but they tell me its "normal". But then again they tell me its normal no matter what I complain about.
