Lariat vs. King Ranch

Took a test drive today in an 02 KR with 60/40 rear bench seat. Want feedback and opinions from the members of the board here: Is the extra money for the KR justified??? Seems like with the KR, I am bying a nice leather package for about another $2,000. If all other options are the same, is it worth it?

Well, now that you've seen who responded to your question, I'm sure you know that type of answer that I'm going to provide however, read on, I may suprise you...

The King Ranch Edition is truely a beautiful piece of work. The soft, supple leather is a joy to sit in and even more of a joy to own. They offer a 'limited' selection of paint combinations (two new ones for 03 (black and pearl)). Personally, I consided the paint selection to be one of the largest determining factors in purchasing my truck. The Chestnut Brown (my color) was simply the sharpest truck that I had ever laid eyes on. The sunshine just makes it glow. That's what caught my eye about the KR first. Shortly thereafter, I took a peek inside the King Ranch. I couldn't believe what I saw. A chocolate brown castano leather package that rivaled anything that I had seen in SUPER luxury vehicles. I had to have it. The full package. The exterior beauty coupled with the sophistication of this leather was enough to make my knees buckle.

I'm sold on the King Ranch. It was more than worth the extra drop in the offering plate when I broke down and purchased mine. I too looked at a Lariat. Drove it. It had the same feel, same handling, same everything; with the exception of 17" wheels on the particular one that I drove. The seats inside the Lariat were nice. The interior laid out identically with the exception of the two HUGE consoles in the middle of my supercrew.

I liked both. Both had the 5.4. Both were 4x2 (I wasn't shopping for 4x4). Both were supercrews. Both had 3.55 gears. Both were two tone paint. Both had the sunroof. Both had bedliners. Both... well.. you get the point.

I had to narrow it down and I had to narrow it down to the reason I liked one or the other. The determining factor was I liked the paint and I liked the interior. Thus, I decided it was worth the extra penny (or two).

Now, the down parts of King Ranch.

I baby my vehicles. They are considered to me as an investment. I am super picky. The paint on the outside... it's the same as everyone else's... lariat, King Ranch, Harley, whatever. Wash it, clay it, wax it, detail the hell out of it... make it look beautiful.

The interior. Here's where we seperate the men from the boys in my opinion. Same layout as the Lariat. Different surface coating. This leather is work. Ask anyone on the KR forum and they'll tell you about the hours they've spent conditioning the leather. Sure, you'll do the same with the Lariat however, the lariat has a clear coat on the leather that will help to protect the leather from spills, etc. The KR leather has no such barrier. If you do not condition and take ultimate care of your seats, they will wear faster and frankly, loose the luster and appeal that you went the extra $ to obtain. I spend about 4-6 hours per MONTH on my seats alone.

With that one HUGE exception (my opinion), the trucks are on the same page.

Figure out for yourself. It's your decision. What do you want your truck to be for you?

Yes, it's a $2k option to go with Premium Heated Castano King Ranch Leather along with lit running boards, painted wheels, a limited paint package, and a King Ranch/F150 badge on the fender and tailgate but, like I said, I determined it was worth it.

I know I made the right decision. I love my truck and wouldn't sell it for what I paid for it.

I know this was a long ramble but, it's really ultimately your call. I just explained the reasons why I KNOW I made the right decision. Feel free to post other KR questions here or in the KR forum.

Best of luck with your decision Marc and, even if you don't go with the KR, I'll still consider you a friend. LOL!!

--see, I can stay on the subject through a post... the next post might not be so focused however!! LOL!

RockPick,

I knew I could count on you!! I agree with you on all of the above. My test drive vehicle was chestnut color, rear 60/40 bench (which works better for me than the captain chairs) . I can't see how a truck is much of an investment due to the amount of depreciation, but I also am very picky about the detail of my ride. I drive nearly 100 miles a day and will have high mileage just by the nature of my work.

Where I am is trying to meet a certain number on the monthly payment. Right now, I pay just over 350/month for my Sport Trac. I will probably be looking at $525/month easy for the KR. There is a white dealer demo Lariat with 5000 miles I can grab for 27900, that's $1,000 UNDER invoice. The KR x-plan is $30,144. With trade in and down payment being the same, the difference comes to $44.10 per month additional payment ($481.40 vs. $525.50). That's quite a difference each month.

Thanks for the lengthy feedback (and for staying with the topic). Hopefully others will do the same!

Well, to each his own. Different strokes for different folks I say! Me, I thought the leather in the king Ranch would make me puke.
But thats me. Also I am not into two tone I like one solid color. So the choice for me without writing a book here was the loaded Lariat with heated seats too. I love it!

I would also not pay $1000 under invoice for a used vehicle(demo)! Because it is used with 5000 miles on it. They can do much better. Because if you wanted to sell or trade that same vehicle with 5000 miles you would take a $3000-$4000 hit on it. I cannot believe dealers try to sell there demo's for almost full price. Because it is used,no other way to look at it. I would rather pay invoice for a brand new one.

Good luck what ever you decide to do!

Madd,

Thanks for the message. They are not trying to sell this demo for full price, it is $1,000 BELOW invoice. I also posted a message on this board "How much for dealer demo?" What do you think is a fair price for a dealer demo with 5,000 miles. Or, should I say, how much below invoice is a fair price?

Let me know! Reply here or on the other post. Thanks.

It ought to be a dollar per mile below invoice. They've made their money on this demo.

Marc -

Right now you should be able to get a brand new Lariat for $1000 (or more) under invoice. I took my Screw in the other day for an oil change and was talking to the internet sales mgr, with the 02 closeout and rebates, they are going for $6500 off of sticker and even $1500 more if you qualify for the RCL & college rebates. Keep shopping, don't buy a demo unless it's an absolute steal.

I liked the Lariat. Test drove it and loved it. Then I started looking for the King Ranch. I love this truck. It's the best and have recieved many comments about the truck and the interior. I'm soooooo glad I ordered the King Ranch.

Thumbs up Lariat

Well I have got to agree with Madd on the interior of the Ranch. I was looking at that truck first but when I looked inside and seen that interior I changed my mind pretty quick. I thought I was the only one here that was turned off by the interior-its a little sore on the eyes IMHO. Well to each his own, you will love any screw you get, make sure you get a power sunroof. Good luck---Paul

It was a tough call for me, also. I may have bought a Lariat at another dealership the same morning that I bought my KR, if the Lariat would have had different seats. I've never regretted buying this truck at any point of ownership, and it's the only vehicle that I can say that about.
I was sold on the leather at first, but now I like the fact that it's a little more unique than other S'crews. The leather does require a little work to keep it in shape, but it's a labor of love. I enjoy taking care of my toys.
The bottom line for me is that was the truck I wanted, the interest was low and I got A plan, plus a $1000 rebate. That was the clincher.
They are both great trucks, and you have to make the payments. Get the one you like if it won't bankrupt you! It's a personal preference thing.
BD
PS- the guys that don't like the KR package, I understand. I hated the "Eddie Bauer" package Ford put on ever vehicle from Escorts to Semis.

Marc,

You need to lighten up a bit, seems like you just want us to stop everything we're doing and give you the answers you demand. I think most everyone is willing to help but getting pushy is no way to make friends. Just because someone gets off topic, you think they aren't being helpful, at least folks are communicating with you and lots of times answers are hidden within a message and you need to read between the lines. With that all said, I'd like to help you but cracking jokes and poking fun is just part of this forum.

I've done some research some time back and this link will take you to the page and you must scroll down to my second post where I justify every detail of the KR vs the Lariat and it's only about $500 difference once you level out the playing field.

Good Luck,

Daveman,

I presume you are referring to a post under the KR message board. (Otherwise, you lost me) If you read the entire post, you will see I am fine.... and that is old news. Yes, I have been really focused on making a wise purchase decision. That post was one of my first, and when I got 10 replies, I was pumped. Then, to read everyone was talking about a Focus??!! I did not ask anyone to drop anything. This message board is voluntary and it took me a post or two to learn this particular group. And this goup is much different than the crowd on the Sport Trac site.

Everyone here has been pretty helpful, especially RockPick. Although, I have been quite suprised at how many views a post will get and so few responses arrive. Especially when you ask a simple question like color preference. At least I haven't gotten the dreaded "DO A SEARCH" response that is so popular on the ST site. And I do appreciate you posting the link to your previous information.

I have had a little bit of fun with RockPick regarding his recent novel, or book and don't see why everyone can't have fun on this board. If you think I'm being too pushy, then sorry. Life is about perception and if that's your perception, then that's reality.

If you have been reading my previous posts, you know I am seriously considering upgrading my Trac, and naturally want to buy WAY more truck than I can afford. Like many of you here on this board, I am looking to others as a source of information. I have a budget and want to get the biggest bang for my dollar. Someone from this board has already put me in contact with someone who can get me x-plan. So, I am already grateful.

Look for me to post again and next time I will try to be aware of my tone.

Thanks!

Marc Stewart,
I can read! I did not say anything about paying full price! $1000 under invoice is to much for a used vehicle (Demo). That's what I said. Now I would not buy a demo unless they knocked off a good $3000 off invoice price, but thats me! Which they will never do because someone will pay what they are asking! Plain and simple, not everyone does there homework.
